Bought the Farm

The plan was to meet a friend for a photo scouting trip last Saturday.  We were going to tour a small organic farm in the West Marin area of the San Francisco Bay Area and along the way stop to visit some local cheese factories but we made a whole day of the event and after the farm tour we headed to the Tomales Bay area to pick up some fresh oysters.

The small cheese factories were a nice way to taste some local manufactured cheese and support their business.  The Tara Firma Farm provided a nice tour explaining how they raised their chickens for cage free organic eggs, and pigs, goats and cattle for meat products.  There weren’t many opportunities to find doors when you’re outdoors but I managed to get a shot of the old chicken coop (the chickens were in the process of being moved to other areas of the farm.

Some of the younger chicks were housed in right part of this building but the hen-house was on the right building next door.

The open door on the right was the old hen-house but most of the chickens were relocated to other areas on the farm.  The open door on the left was a storeroom but the closed-door was where the younger birds lived before joining the other egg laying hens.

We were introduced to the resident barn owls (a parent and its offspring but they lived in different barns on the property).  I shot photos of both but the parent was sleeping and the offspring woke up and watched me as I shot its photo.

The scouting event was fun and successful and we encountered many birds, cattle on trails and a gopher snake in addition to nice picturesque rolling hills landscape.

  1. OH MY! I love the old chicken coup doors with the X’s and their ability to open the top or bottom half at will. The Barn Owl is Golden! WOW!

You scouted it now take me out on the same trip for the day! Pretty please! 🙂

    WOW, what a great day!

    1. Thanks Deborah. Dan will be setting up a meetup soon but if nothing is planned that could be a come join me event. The light is best early in the morning or late afternoon for sunsets to get the shadows on the hills. Our farm tour was at 11 a.m. so we had some harsh light but a fun day.

  2. omg – I was sure this post was going to eventually lead us to the conclusion that you were inspired to literally buy a farm! I think I need another cup of coffee.

ps – love the owl. She has a slightly pained look on her face. I’m guessing the little ones have been keeping her up 😉

    1. Thanks; just a play on words (normally this statement means someone died). Actually, the farm was recently purchased by a new owner with business experience in another farm, I think somewhere in the Sonoma area. This owl was the juvenile; the parent was in another barn sleeping since it was mid day and after shooting a few shots of the juvenile it woke up and watched me as I moved below it’s perch for this shot.

  3. Oh wow! Those are some fabulous doors! Old, wooden doors are my favorite! They’re all gorgeous. That last one makes me miss my Dutch door. So useful.
LOVE the shot of the owl! That is a great shot, such expression 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! Appreciate the comments; I almost thought the Dutch Doors might not elicit too much interest but it was the best I could find on this day outdoors. I just got into shooting animals and was happy to have a stationary subject since I was using my old camera while the other was in the shop (again), so I’m glad you liked its expression (take a close look at it’s eyes because you can see them open watching me)..
