Door Made in Hawaii

On my doorscursion in Honolulu last month, I walked past the Kaka’ako District on the way back to my condo rental.  This area used to contain many industrial and warehouse businesses but it has been modernized to some industrial, commercial and residential uses.  My friend and I hunted for summer jobs in this area when we were in highschool and landed a job working in a wholesale carpeting warehouse.

I saw some interesting wall murals as I passed the area and kept my eyes open for interesting doors to post on Norm Frampton’s Thursday Doors blog.  If you don’t know about Norm’s Thursday Door blog you’ve been missing out; he apparently lured got people from all over the world to post photos of doors and sometimes, histories about the places they got their door photos from, every Thursday.  If you would like to participate, just go to his Thursday Door site, click on this blue frog button and upload your door blog and wait for the fun to begin.

Back to my doorscurion for this week; I took a turn down the block from the main street where I was walking and saw a colorful building and, like a moth drawn to fire, I had to investigate.  I saw someone in the front of the open doors to The Ding Kingdom Surfboard Repair shop and I started to raise my camera to shoot a photo when the guy turned around and questioned me if I was taking his photo.  I told him I was not trying to take his photo but a photo of the building and doors in particular.  He asked why doors so I explained I wrote blogs about doors on Norm’s TD website.

Not certain if he bought this outlandish story (who goes around photographing doors?) but he told me, “do you want to see a door?  Follow me, I have something to show you”.  He led me into the shop, telling not to touch the fiberglass surfboards being worked on and moving some things out of my path so I could see it.  He proudly said, “what do you think, isn’t that some door?”  I shot some photos and he said it was built and was part of the building when he moved in; apparently it was the bathroom door.  I had to admit, it was “some” door!

Thanking him, he told me his name was Roi, I asked if I could finally take a photo of his shop (the 1st photo above) and he said as long as he didn’t have to be in the photo, go ahead and shoot away.

This is my story and I’m sticking to it!  And Roi, if you happen to remember the TD website, this is what I promised you (free advertisement throughout the world to repair dings in surfboards).
