On my doorscursion in Honolulu last month, I walked past the Kaka’ako District on the way back to my condo rental. This area used to contain many industrial and warehouse businesses but it has been modernized to some industrial, commercial and residential uses. My friend and I hunted for summer jobs in this area when we were in highschool and landed a job working in a wholesale carpeting warehouse.
I saw some interesting wall murals as I passed the area and kept my eyes open for interesting doors to post on Norm Frampton’s Thursday Doors blog. If you don’t know about Norm’s Thursday Door blog you’ve been missing out; he apparently lured got people from all over the world to post photos of doors and sometimes, histories about the places they got their door photos from, every Thursday. If you would like to participate, just go to his Thursday Door site, click on this blue frog button and upload your door blog and wait for the fun to begin.
Back to my doorscurion for this week; I took a turn down the block from the main street where I was walking and saw a colorful building and, like a moth drawn to fire, I had to investigate. I saw someone in the front of the open doors to The Ding Kingdom Surfboard Repair shop and I started to raise my camera to shoot a photo when the guy turned around and questioned me if I was taking his photo. I told him I was not trying to take his photo but a photo of the building and doors in particular. He asked why doors so I explained I wrote blogs about doors on Norm’s TD website.
Not certain if he bought this outlandish story (who goes around photographing doors?) but he told me, “do you want to see a door? Follow me, I have something to show you”. He led me into the shop, telling not to touch the fiberglass surfboards being worked on and moving some things out of my path so I could see it. He proudly said, “what do you think, isn’t that some door?” I shot some photos and he said it was built and was part of the building when he moved in; apparently it was the bathroom door. I had to admit, it was “some” door!
Thanking him, he told me his name was Roi, I asked if I could finally take a photo of his shop (the 1st photo above) and he said as long as he didn’t have to be in the photo, go ahead and shoot away.
This is my story and I’m sticking to it! And Roi, if you happen to remember the TD website, this is what I promised you (free advertisement throughout the world to repair dings in surfboards).
Thanks for visiting my blog and thanks to Norm 2.0 for his Thursday Doors blog. For more blogs and photos of doors by others please go to: Thursday Doors.
I think you win the oddball door of the week prize – that is some door, indeed!

Haha; I agree. If someone doing surfboard repairs built that door I can say he/she probably inhaled too much resin fumes but Roi told me it was there when he moved in. Thanks, Dan!

Thanks Sherry! I thought this guy Roi was going to deny my photo op but after explaining TD and what us collective door crazies do he had to show me his crazy looking door. It makes talking to people about TD easier now. 🙂

I love it when encounters like this happen! Roi sounds like an interesting character, and maybe worthy of a blog post himself, but this door is pretty unique!
It’s like a patchwork quilt. I’m glad he saved it.
Do you think he’s a closet Door addict? 🙂
Have a great week-end Gordon!

Thanks Deborah! Nothing like having to explain what TD is all about and having the person offer you more than you expected. I came across a lot of doors and wall murals in this area which I will post in future TD blogs.
Wishing you a great weekend as well. Did you see Anna’s eagle photos? She did return to the site after Alviso and captured some great bird in flight shots. Makes me want to go back (maybe Sunday if I’m not doing anything).

I did see Anna’s images on Flickr. They’re fantastic! I saw the Eagle Saturday morning sitting on the top of the next tree over, but the light was so bad read dull and overcast that I didn’t take out my camera. I just watched. I stopped by on my way home but he wasn’t there and it was getting dark so I didn’t stick around.
Sunday has rain in the forecast, but I’m planning to go by Saturday morning and swing by Alviso to see the Hummers before meeting Dali for birding adventure at 10am.

Sounds like Roi was perhaps quite proud of that door! It’s definitely very impressive and unique

Thanks, Pistachios! Guess the old saying about not being able to tell about a book by its cover is true, Roi turned out to be a nice guy. It was a good encouter that made my day as it gave me a great door and backstory.

Wow. I’ve never seen anything like that! VERY creative. I hope someone finds me clicking doors and invites me to see somethin so original!

Thanks, Joey! Hope you find some good encounters too. Have to admit, telling people about TD does “open doors”. 🙂

Yep, hands down that is the most original one I have seen in quite some time.
Thanks a bunch to Roi. If I’m ever in the area and need repairs to my surfboard I’ll know where to go.
It’s so cool when people are open enough to willingly humor our silly obsession 😀

Your post made me realize the risks we take in getting those TD shots. 😮 But that ‘bathroom’ door is amazing. No wonder he kept it, way too unusual to replace.

Thanks, Jean! I guess some risks are worth the reward. Let your senses (of danger) be your guide and talk fast about how people are posting doors all over the world on Norm’s site and hopze for the best 😉

😮 Way to go, Roi and Gordon! If you ever see him again, tell him he won a little Thursday Doors internet. 😀

I really like that door. It is kind of funny to think, who goes around taking photos of doors?

Thank you. Well, Norm found an underground community and gave them a place to express themselves. It’s also a good way to see the world without having to spend much money. 🙂

If they had hillbillies in Hawaii, their doors would look like that 🙂 Here in the Ozarks, they are covered in old license plates. lol Now I’m gonna have to find one to share oops!

Thank you, the old thinking was Hawaii was populated with grass shacks (probably no doors) but you would be surprised if you visited now (all of the most expensive designer stores are there).
