Where’s that Darn Door?

Just returned from my annual trip home, Hawaii, this week so that’s why I haven’t been posting anything for a few weeks.  This post will follow-up where I left off in my last post, “Sleight of Hands Doors”, but it has photos from my recent trip.

I took my wife to the Kaka’ako District this time to shoot photos of the wall murals because I found the street wall murals last year.  I learned that they were having a festival while we were visiting this year to paint new and re-paint over existing murals; it was called the Hawaii Pow Wow.  This event has existed for several years and street mural painters from all over the world participate in these events.  I don’t know when this event first happened but Hawaii started their Pow Wow several years ago and other cities now have their own Pow Wows.  A link to the Hawaii Pow Wow can be found here: Hawaii Pow Wow   I will likely do more posts about the Pow Wow in later blogs.

Unfortunately, my timing was off.  The festival was to begin a couple of days after we visited the district and we were staying on the other side of the island this time so it meant we were probably not going to see the artists in action due to the long drive into town.  But we had fun finding the existing murals before they were to be painted over.  I noticed one of the walls and doors that I featured in my last post had already been painted over so I took current photos of it to see what the wall will look like next year or later.

Here’s my door photo from a Pow Wow mural done in 2014 that has not yet been painted over, hence my title, “Where’s the Darn Door?”.

There’s someone, still trying to find that door or another way out of that building:

When I saw the image above, on the wall among other paintings, I was speechless.  I couldn’t figure out how the artist could paint such lifelike hands on the metal vent louvers but upon closer inspection, the entire image was painted on a metal or wooden block and attached to the wall at a location where such a vent might have been constructed.  This find made my day and when others around me saw what I found they started snapping photos of it too.

So, if you’re trying to find that darn door to Norm Frampton’s Thursday Doors (Norm is the Head Doorman to his Thursday Doors portal) take a look at his current post on Thursday Doors and then press the blue frog doorbell to open the door portal to other door bloggers and if you choose, post a door of your own.  Me?  I’ll try to find a vent cover in Norm’s Thursday Doors portal to claw my way out…

Thanks for visiting my post and thanks to Norm 2.0 for his creation of the Thursday Doors website.  For more posts and photos of doors by others please go to: Thursday Doors.

    1. Thanks, JT. The Kaka’ako District is not near the UH. It is between Ala Moana Blvd and Kapiolani Blvd and between Piikoi St. and Ward St. The old Ward Warehouse Shopping Center used to be along Ala Moana Blvd where the district border ended but they demolished that shopping center recently. The closest landmark is the Ala Moana Shopping Center (it is just west of it where Piikoi St. separates it from the the Ala Moana Shopping Center). Try the link I provided in my post; it might show the location.

  1. hello Gordon, welcome back! Sorry I didn’t reply last time – was getting sick, and that bug lingered on forever. At the same time my son from Holland was here – he got the bug too, all in all … we didn’t do much for a few weeks! About that darn door – isn’t it interesting that they often include the door in the murals (but maybe to prevent burglary? Hope you had a good time in Hawaii? Must be hard to see your mother getting less and less functional.
    Glad you’re back!

    1. Thanks, Jesh! Hope you’re feeling better these days and sorry to hear that your visiting son also got sick. Hope he felt better to enjoy the trip before returning to Holland (unless he is still here in which case I hope he is enjoying his stay).
Glad I got to see my mom; she is doing ok since her move. We had a great time and if you visit Honolulu you should see the Pow Wow paintings in person; the are artists are very creative!

  2. Looked at the pow wow – nice thinking space! I might like painting big, but I don’t think I’ll go as far as murals of high rises! There was a reason why Jacob built the movable stairs:):)
