Where’s that Darn Door?

Just returned from my annual trip home, Hawaii, this week so that’s why I haven’t been posting anything for a few weeks.  This post will follow-up where I left off in my last post, “Sleight of Hands Doors”, but it has photos from my recent trip.

I took my wife to the Kaka’ako District this time to shoot photos of the wall murals because I found the street wall murals last year.  I learned that they were having a festival while we were visiting this year to paint new and re-paint over existing murals; it was called the Hawaii Pow Wow.  This event has existed for several years and street mural painters from all over the world participate in these events.  I don’t know when this event first happened but Hawaii started their Pow Wow several years ago and other cities now have their own Pow Wows.  A link to the Hawaii Pow Wow can be found here: Hawaii Pow Wow   I will likely do more posts about the Pow Wow in later blogs.

Unfortunately, my timing was off.  The festival was to begin a couple of days after we visited the district and we were staying on the other side of the island this time so it meant we were probably not going to see the artists in action due to the long drive into town.  But we had fun finding the existing murals before they were to be painted over.  I noticed one of the walls and doors that I featured in my last post had already been painted over so I took current photos of it to see what the wall will look like next year or later.

Here’s my door photo from a Pow Wow mural done in 2014 that has not yet been painted over, hence my title, “Where’s the Darn Door?”.

When I saw the image above, on the wall among other paintings, I was speechless.  I couldn’t figure out how the artist could paint such lifelike hands on the metal vent louvers but upon closer inspection, the entire image was painted on a metal or wooden block and attached to the wall at a location where such a vent might have been constructed.  This find made my day and when others around me saw what I found they started snapping photos of it too.
